The case of turkey “with a surprise” has unexpected denouement

01/29/2008

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority, in collaboration with the State Veterinary Administration, has recently dealt with an interesting case. A consumer from Prostějov bought deep frozen turkey in a Lidl store in December last year. When, after a month, she decided to bake it and eat it, there was a surprise waiting for her. When she cut the turkey, she found a plastic object in it, remotely resembling a syringe.

The consumer complained at the State Veterinary Administration; however, because the product in question was packed product from France, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority dealt with the complaint too. When investigating the origin of this product, CAFIA inspectors came to the conclusion that that foreign object is poultry pop up thermometer which helps consumers to identify when the turkey is done. These pop ups are commonly used in countries of Western Europe. The CAFIA’s finding was also confirmed by Lidl management. The problem therefore occurred only because the consumer has not studied the label well when she bought the turkey, because the pop up was properly indicated on the packaging (see photo).

Based on these findings, it was ascertained that this product is safe and can be sold.
