On Thursday 20 May, some media reported that the chain store Interspar conducted a sales event during which wines from Spain and Hungary were offered in shelves marked as "Wines from Moravia, Wines from Bohemia". According to the media, this logo also appeared on a bottle of Chardonnay from Víno Mikulov, originating in Slovakia.
Based on this information, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority carried out random checks on selected Interspar premises in Brno, Karlovy Vary, Plzeň, Ostrava, Prostějov and Frýdek-Místek. The inspectors checked labels of wines displayed in stalls and shelves with a promotional poster with titles and logos "Wines from Moravia, Wines from Bohemia", and also fliers for this event. In the majority of establishments, only Czech wines were put into circulation. Only in Interspar Prostějov, the inspectors found Red Portugal Classic originating in Hungary, in a total amount of 45 litres.
In Interspar Plzeň, the inspectors revealed 26 bottles of Chardonnay in normal shelf with wine, which were labelled as "quality variety wine, Južnoslovenská wine-growing region" and bore the "Wines from Moravia" logo. Inspection at the company Vína Mikulov, for which the wine was bottled in Slovakia, revealed that more than 67 thousand of bottles (i.e. over 50 thousand litres) had been placed on the market since November 2007. A company representative said that the company knew about the problem from the media and that it had already taken steps to remedy the situation.
Vína Mikulov is owned by joint-stock company Bohemia Sekt, Starý Plzenec. Administrative proceedings will be initiated against Interspar and Bohemia Sekt for consumer deception.
Quality wines must have a label bearing information from which wine-growing region the grapes from which the wine was made are. The permission to label wines with "Wines from Moravia" or "Wines from Bohemia" logos is granted to wine-makers by Vinařský fond of the Czech Republic. It is a marketing label that should promote Czech quality wines.
