Today, food can be bought at many unusual places, for example, in pharmacies or chemists. However, time after time, consumers may happen to find food sold at flea markets. Inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority therefore set out on a well-known flea market in Prague on Kolbenova Street to check sales conditions of food.
During the first control carried out on sixteen stalls, serious deficiencies regarding compliance with food safety, labelling or hygiene regulations were found. The sellers often offered expired food or food without Czech labelling. Food with expired best before date was not separated from other food and was not labelled. Milk and meat products were not stored in cooling boxes. One of the sellers cut and packed meat products with bare hands without using protective clothes. He even could not wash his hands, because there was not any source of water or a washbasin.
During the second control, the inspectors checked seven stalls and again found the same deficiencies. In addition to this, they found out that one of the sellers was not registered as food business operator. Another one sold smoked fishes in cardboard boxes although recommended storage was at 0 – 4°C. Inspectors measured the temperature in fishes over 13°C. However, after the first control, milk and meat products disappeared from some stalls and one seller, after having found that the inspectors came again, closed the stall and left.
During both control actions CAFIA inspectors prohibited the sale of 452 kg of foods amounting to CZK 20 thousand. They were mostly various kinds of confectionery products, yoghurts, creams, cocoa powder and fish products. Administrative proceeding will be initiated against all sellers at which deficiencies were found. Some of them can be fined tens thousand crowns.
