Annual Report 1999

02/01/2000

This chapter summarises results of quality controls (mainly of analytic and sensory characteristics set in the procedural decrees to Food Law) and results of controls of labelling (including controls of dates of expiry and minimum durability, and inspections focused on false labelling - "adulterations").

In the determination of analytic characteristics 1,404 samples were detected as non-complying, especially in commodities such as grape wine, dairy products, alcohol-spirits and bread.

In the inspections focused on labelling 7,347 samples did not conform especially in commodities such as alcohol - spirits, bread, grape wine and chocolate - sweets.

In the determination of sensory characteristics altogether 4,462 samples did not conform, especially in commodities such as fresh vegetables, fresh fruit and grape wine.

Results of the control of labelling

Vitamins and minerals

In the inspections focused on labelling, observance of the contents of vitamins and minerals declared on labels was also verified, especially in soft drinks, fats- oils, food for special dietary use, slats, etc.

Results of analyses of the contents of vitamins and minerals declared on labels

Characteristic

Analyses

Number of non-complying results
%

Number of analysed samples

Number of non-complying results

Vitamin A 58 13 22,4
Vitamin B1 84 5 6,0
Vitamin B2 78 5 6,4
Vitamin B6 88 3 3,4
Vitamin C 288 43 14,9
Vitamin E 101 16 15,8
Magnesium 41 15 36,6
Calcium 48 19 39,6
Iodine 48 7 14,6

The above table shows that the number of non-conformances detected in target inspections focused on the determination of vitamins and minerals contents was relatively high. E.g., one sample of salt declared on its label that 100 grams of the product contain 600 mg of calcium (whereas only 13 mg were detected in the laboratory analysis) and 100 mg of magnesium (whereas only 57 mg were detected in the laboratory analysis). The cases when values detected in an analysed sample were lower than the values declared on the label were frequently repeated in more types of vitamins or minerals.
