The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) discovered canned meat products on the market that were adulterated with regard to the declared meat content — the actual meat content was approximately 20% lower than stated on the packaging. The product concerned is the following food item:
Pork Meat with Garlic, packaging: FE tin can, marked with a minimum durability date of: 20 February 2028, batch number: BB 20.02.2028, country of origin: Czech Republic, manufacturer: Whalley a.s., Mikulášovická 552, 407 78 Velký Šenov, Czech Republic, additional information – veterinary approval mark (veterinary oval): CZ 19138 ES.
Among other things, the manufacturer stated on the packaging ingredients list: “90% pork meat”. However, laboratory analysis conducted in an accredited laboratory confirmed that the product batch actually contained only 71.1% meat.
The information on the packaging was therefore misleading to consumers regarding the true composition of the food product.
CAFIA inspectors collected the non-compliant sample at a store operated by Kaufland Česká republika v.o.s., Na Sádkách 1444, České Budějovice 370 05. CAFIA ordered the company to immediately withdraw the affected batch from all of its branches and will initiate administrative proceedings concerning the imposition of a fine.
