Warning for consumers: Prohibited pesticide carbofuran in 2 tons of goji from China

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) warns consumers against occurrence of non-compliant foodstuff goji berry - Lycium chinense with proved presence of pesticide carbofuran, which is present on the market:

  1. POEX  Fruit Exclusive – Goji – sušené ovoce kustovnice čínská (dried fruit goji berry), 100 g, producer: POEX Velké Meziříčí, a.s., lots:
  • L816600731, BBD by: 15.6.2019,
  • L816300731, BBD by: 12.6.2019,
  • L822200731, BBD by: 10.8.2019.

According to the information of the producer, the non-compliant lots in question were distributed into retail network of company Kaufland Česká republika v.o.s.

 

  1. Směs ovoce s křupinkami, (22% of goji in a mix of fruit with crunchies), 400 g, lot: 
  • L822800731, BBD by: 16.5.2019.

According to the information of the producer, the non-compliant lot in question was distributed into company ČESKÉ CUKROVINKY s.r.o.

 

  1. Směs cornflakes MIX s ovocem, (15% of goji in a mix of cornflakes and fruit), lot: 
  • L817700731, BBD by: 26.3.2019.

According to the information of the producer, the non-compliant lot in question was distributed into company ČESKÉ CUKROVINKY s.r.o.

The foodstuffs concerned were made of a consignment of goji weighing 2 tons and originating from POEX Velké Meziřící a.s., of which supplier was company Wolfberry s.r.o. from Brno.

CAFIA received the information on the occurrence of the non-compliant lot of goji by means of a notification in the European Rapid Alert System RASFF. According to the notification, presence of pesticide carbofuran amounting to 0.045 mg/kg was confirmed in the given lot of goji. Carbofuran used to be applied as a strong insecticide and due to its undesirable effects, the EU has been prohibited it since 2008. The notification further stated that the lot also contained insecticide amitraz amounting to 0.88 mg/kg, however, its maximum permitted amount is 0.25 mg/kg.

With regard the above mentioned facts, CAFIA inspectors ordered the producer to immediately withdraw the non-compliant lots from all their purchasers on the market. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the operators concerned.

CAFIA recommends all consumers they do not eat the foodstuffs in question.
