CAFIA detected tea with tropane alkaloids in Tesco retail chain

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) found non-compliant herbal tea “TESCO MIX OF HERBS bylinný čaj, porcovaný” in distribution chain of company Tesco Stores ČR a.s.

Laboratory analysis carried out by CAFIA confirmed presence of atropine amounting to 213 μg/kg and scopolamine amounting to 44.7 μg/kg. Atropine and scopolamine are tropane alkaloids with known negative impacts on human health and they must not be present in foodstuffs.

Best before date of the foodstuff was by 05. 2019, lot L3496/2/125 and it was distributed onto the Czech market by company Tesco Stores ČR a.s., Vršovická 68/1527, 100 00, Prague.

The tea in question is not suitable for human consumption, in particular by children and older people. CAFIA recommends consumers they avoid consumption of the given lot.

The inspected person was ordered to immediately withdraw the lot concerned from all its branches. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.

CAFIA notified the above mentioned detection into the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
