Maize puffs contained three unauthorised azo dyes

05/26/2017

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) found a snack in which a laboratory analysis proved presence of three kinds of unauthorised synthetic azo dyes. The product concerned was Trudi - Kukuřičné křupky sladké, Extrudovaný výrobek (Maize sweet puffs, puffed product), packaged à 70 g, with best before date by: 23rd  May 2017, producer: Július Šuvert Fritex, 980 33 Hajnáčka 125, Slovakia, supplier: Racional CZ s.r.o., Vraclav 5, 56542, country of origin: Slovakia. The lot in question was delivered into Czech company Martin Zbroj, Zálší 18, 56 501 Zálší.

The laboratory analysis confirmed that the product contained so-called azo dyes, namely ponceau 4R, yellow SY (E110) and quinoline yellow (E 104). Legislation forbidding use of any azo dyes into snacks was hence violated.

The product in question further failed to provide consumers with warning that contained azo dyes may have unfavourable impact on activities and attention of children. Indicating this warning on the labelling of foodstuffs with azo dyes is laid down by Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.
