10/08/2004

Following the invitation of CAFIA Director General – Ing. Jakub Šebesta, Dr. Zsolt Horváth, representative of the Hungarian Food Safety Office (HFSO), visited yesterday the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority.

The main subject of the discussion was Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed - RASFF. Similarly as CAFIA for the Czech Republic, the Hungarian Food Safety Office is the national contact point of this system for Hungary. Both parts informed each other how is the functioning of RASFF ensured. During a debate on this subject were discussed particularly risk assessment issues, technical background of the system and specific examples of notification announcing dangerous products.

The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) in the Czech Republic is based in the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 January 2002. Through RASFF are among the European Commission, EU Member States and EFSA transmitted information about presence of dangerous food or feed that could threat consumer health. On the basis of information exchange among RASFF participants, measures are taken in order to prevent such food or feed from being placed into circulation or to withdraw it as soon as possible.

Except for RASFF, issues such as import controls of foodstuffs of non-animal origin from third countries, irradiated foodstuffs inspection or conditions for placing foodstuffs on the Community market were discussed.
