Also forest fruits sold at stalls must be safe

07/22/2004

boruvky.jpg Also seasonally sold forest fruits which now appear mainly on stalls and markets must comply with relevant legislation. They must be, above all, safe, properly labelled and in certain cases they must satisfy relevant Czech State Standard (ČSN 46 3030). It is not without interest that this Standard applies only in the Czech Republic whilst there is no similar regulation applicable within the EU Member States.

What can now be seen at stalls the most often are blueberries. According to the above Standard, only whole, sound and clean blueberries may be vended. They must be free of mould, visible foreign substances, pests and foreign smell or taste. Furthermore, blueberries must not be washed and affected by rotting. Fruits must be sufficiently developed and ripe. Goods must be properly labelled (among others with the name of vended foodstuff, classification, price, etc.) and every seller is required to have a valid authorization to sell. Sometimes, usually in cases of temporary workers, so called medical certificates are forgotten. These are necessary for handling with foodstuffs. All mentioned requirements are applicable to vendors both in shops and markets or stands along roads.

The above ČSN also takes into account other forest fruits, such as cranberries, blackberries, raspberries and fen-berries, cornels, rosehips or elderberries. Quality requirements for their marketing are similar to those of blueberries.
