Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority has evaluated second round of inspection of meat products

In the course of November and December the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) inspected for second time the compliance with so-called meat products regulations. An Amendment of Decree No. 326/2001Coll. that came into force on 1st September last year, sets for some meat products specific requirements for their composition, physical and chemical qualities and also their appearance, taste and smell. Particular product names (for example: salami „Vysočina“, „Poličan“, „turistický“, „lovecký“, frankfurters „Spišské“ and so on) can be used only if the producer complies with prescribed requirements.

The inspectors concetrated on non-perishable meat products and checked how producers who had failed in previous inspection had fulfilled measures to remedy the defects. 229 samples
of non-perishable meat products from 34 producers were taken at retail outlets during November and December. 4 of the samples (i.e. less than 2%) did not meet the requirements: 2 products did not correspond to the prescribed sensory criteria; one of them was proved to have an excessive content of poultry meat; and the other one did not contain the prescribed minimum of pure muscle protein.
 
New inspection of the products that had failed the previous inspections again proved the presence of poultry meat where it is not allowed. The company DELVITA a.s. repetedly sold a product (producer: MADE, Praha) under the name of „špekáček“ although that product did not meet the prescribed requirements and therefore could not be so labelled. The (CAFIA) regards this case as deceptive sales practices and will initiate administrative proceedings and inflict a penalty.

Inspectors forbade further salle of all unsatisfactory products and ordered so-called measures to remedy the ascertained deficiencies. The State Veterinary Administration, which is
competent to intervene at producers, was also informed about the results of this inspection.

These results showed that a majority of producers respected the meat products regulations. They had either adjusted their technology to meet the requirements or renamed their products.
