The inspectors took the total of 24 samples of various batches of edible salt enriched with iodine, iodine and fluorine, and nitrite pickling salt. All salts contained both the prescribed quantity of iodine (on average 25.2 mg/kg), and they were properly labelled.
The edible salt is imported in the Czech Republic especially from Germany and Poland, to less extent also from Slovakia, Italy and Croatia. It is also possible to find a smaller quantity of salt in the market that is not enriched with iodine.
The World Health Organisation recommends a daily intake of iodine between 0.1 and 0.14 mg per a person, the decree of the Ministry of Health in CR states a recommended daily intake of 150 micrograms of iodine per a person.
The results that CAFIA obtained will be used within the framework of cooperation with public health authorities as one of the source documents for the activities of the Interdepartmental Commission at the State Health Institute seeking solution for the iodine deficit.
