The inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) continue with inspections of half-fermented wine. So far, they have checked 103 sellers of this beverage in all regions. During inspections they have imposed 37 measures to remedy deficiencies concerning incorrect labelling (17), missing information about the producer of half-fermented wine (13), missing accompanying documents (13), or unsatisfactory hygiene conditions of sale (14). The most deficiencies (46%) were identified in Prague and Central Bohemia regions, in South Moravia region (39%), and in Olomouc region (36%). The inspectors also continuously check whether measures imposed on sellers and stall operators have been implemented.

In these days the CAFIA inspectors have begun to take samples of half-fermented wine for laboratory analysis to verify whether exogenous water has not been added to it. It is not possible to add water to half-fermented wine, just as it is not possible to add it to wine. Although such “multiplication” of wine or half-fermented wine is one of the most serious misconducts for honest winemakers, the CAFIA has already met with such cases in previous years.

The inspections of half-fermented wine will continue. According to the Wine Act,
half-fermented wine can be sold from 1 August to 30 November.
