CR_vlajka.jpg ukrajina.jpg The Director General of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority, Mr. Jakub Šebesta, participated at the invitation of the World Bank in international seminar “Food Safety Systems” held in Kiev. As one of the participating foreign experts, he presented the experience of the Czech Republic of establishing food safety system. He also took part in a working group where in addition to the particular experience concerning food controls, laboratory activities, laboratory certification, pesticide residues monitoring in foodstuffs, operation of the RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) within the EU and the Czech Republic, constant consumer education and CAFIA´s and Czech Republic’s future prospects in this field were discussed.

The seminar was part of a project aimed at establishing functioning modern food safety system in Ukraine, organised and co-financed by the World Bank. Its part is to enhance effectiveness of supervision over food and food safety and to support awareness of Ukrainian consumers in this field.

The presentation of CAFIA Director General drew exceptional attention and discussion during the seminar. According to Mr. Jakub Šebesta, Ukraine is now in similar situation the Czech Republic was in the early 90s. First of all, it was necessary to create appropriate legal environment, which for now does not exist in Ukraine, and to transfer responsibility for food safety from the government to producers, as is the practice in the European Union. “The government can be responsible only for supervising compliance with food law. Therefore, what will be important for Ukraine is political support so that this system can be set up efficiently and functionally from the very beginning”, said Mr. Šebesta after his return.
