Are foodstuffs on the Czech market safe enough?

03/06/2001

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority is a body of public administration, subordinated to the Ministry of Agriculture. Its main scope of activities is the control of physical and legal entities producing or releasing into circulation food and tobacco products.

The CAFIA's control priorities in the past year, similar as ever, were as follows:

  • food safety
  • false labelling of food (so-called "adulterations")
  • control of implementation of the system of critical points in production (new since the beginning of the year 2000)
  • control of the observance of other obligatory requirements set for the release of food and tobacco products in circulation

The CAFIA inspectors carried out 31,807 individual inspections in the past period. The highest number of inspections was performed in retail market (18,002), production (10,174), wholesale (3,488) and in other facilities (e.g. restaurants, etc. - 143). The increase in the number of inspections against 1999 (4,623) was due to controls associated with the newly implemented system of critical points, which had been carried out since 1 January 2000.

The inspections reported altogether:

  • 10,875 non-conforming samples of food and tobacco products, which did not comply with legislative requirements for safety, quality and labelling
  • the non-conforming samples represented the quantity of 788,323 kilograms, 896,084 litres and 38,738 pieces of products

In the year 2000 CAFIA imposed for violation of duties laid down by legislation:

  • 2,874 penalties imposed in administrative procedures in the total amount of CZK 31,382,300
  • bans on releasing food into circulation were imposed on foodstuffs in the total value of CZK 26,508,882
       of which:
       - market share - imported products - CZK 12,420,538
       - market share - domestic products - CZK 6,372,106
       - production share - CZK 7,716,238

In the course of the year 2000, CAFIA significantly expanded its activities in the area of intertional relations, which focused on communication with the European Committee both from the standpoint of admission of the Czech Republic in EU, and from the standpoint of extensive changes to the European food law. CAFIA has actively participated in professional debate and legislative formulation of numerous regulations (laws and decrees) in conformity with assignment of the Ministry of Agriculture of CR.

CAFIA regularly informs the public about its activities in mass media. CAFIA effectively uses its web sites, which play an important role in providing outlets for publication and bring regular up-dates.
