The Project consisted of 30 specialised seminars dealing mainly with implementation of critical points (HACCP) in production, processing, importation and sale of fresh fruit and vegetables, EU approach to genetically modified foodstuffs and, in general, legislation in the European Union. In the course of ten months 280 inspectors and 350 producers, importers and sellers of food were trained. The courses were open to public and free of charge.
The specialised seminars of the project were in charge of "Irish Agri-Food Development" (IAFD), a company from Dublin that, apart from other things, is actively engaged in educational activities and training in the sector of food, environment and agriculture. IAFD was selected on the basis of an outcome of an international tender.
In the opinion of Mrs. Nolwenn Treguer, representative of EU Delegation in the Czech Republic, the Project organisation was highly professional both from the side of CAFIA and IAFD. And the Project itself represented a significant contribution to the approximation to standards valid within EU.
The Project is part of conception of the European policy of food safety based on continuous control of the entire food chain. The main responsibility for food safety is then shifted directly onto producers. It is therefore necessary to instruct and inform properly also the producers. CAFIA can then function not only as a "controller" making sure that legal standards are observed, but it can also become a partner and consultant for the producers.
A complete Phare Project is available on a CD-ROM at the CAFIA headquarters.
