CAFIA PERFORMS CONTROLS OF NOVEL FOOD

07/31/2001

Since the beginning of this year the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority has been performing controls of genetically modified foods, basically such that might contain genetically modified DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and that are referred to as novel food.

In compliance with Law on Food and Tobacco Products, being in effect from January 1, 2001, such foodstuffs can be released into circulation only with approval and under conditions laid down by the Ministry of Health.

The CAFIA inspectors took altogether twenty samples of foodstuffs that might be potentially assigned as novel food. The laboratory inspections proved the presence of the modified DNA in six cases. That means that a genetically modified organism was used in their manufacturing.

CAFIA ordered to all the mentioned producers to submit a valid approval issued by the Ministry of Health relating to the release of those foods into circulation. Based on the latest information, the manufacturers have already applied the Ministry of Health for issuance of the approval.

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority will further perform continuous controls of novel food all through the year.

Releasing the GM foodstuffs into circulation in the Czech Republic is governed by the Act No. 110/1997, Cool. of L., on Food and Tobacco Products in its valid wording, and Act No. 153/2000, Coll. of L., on Handling with the Genetically Modified Organisms and Products.
