09/03/2018

Based on previous detections related to apples originating in Poland at which CAFIA laboratory analysis proved presence of pesticides exceeding the limit or presence of unauthorised pesticides, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) continues with intensive inspections of this assortment.

CAFIA inspectors currently found a non-compliant lot of apples of Golden Delicious variety originating in Poland and sold by company Velkoobchod ovoce-zelenina Zdeněk Cimbura s.r.o. in Písek. CAFIA laboratory detected presence of pesticide propargite amounting to 0.36 milligrams per kilogram (mg/ kg) at the lot in question.

Using of propargite for plant protection is banned in the EU territory for its undesirable side effects.

“Repeated detections of CAFIA are a sign of system problem of Polish supervisory authorities with safety of apples originating from Poland. CAFIA will continue with its intensive inspections. Following to further results, I will take appropriate measures as I have already mentioned before,” Miroslav Toman, Minister of Agriculture, said.

Company EFES, spol. s r.o., Prague 5 delivered the non-compliant lot into the CR and almost 7.5% tons were placed onto the Czech market. Company P.P.H. “EWA-BIS“ Sp. z o.o., 02-233 Warszawa, Serwitufy was then the Polish supplier of the apples in question.

CAFIA ordered the importer to check the presence of apples and possibly withdraw the deficient lot from the purchasers without undue delay.

”CAFIA ordered the importer to release following three lots of the given Polish supplier only after analysis for content of pesticides is carried out,” Martin Klanica, Director General of CAFIA said. “Importer thus may place apples of the given Polish company on the market only after confirmation of compliant values according to maximum limits of residue pesticides laid down by Regulation (EC) No. 396/3005, namely as regards 23 substances or groups of substances. Analyses have to be carried out in a laboratory accredited for the given type of analyses and complying with general requirements for ability of testing and calibrating laboratories.”

CAFIA informed of similar cases in its press releases of 14. 8. 2018, 21. 6. 2018, 23. 2. 2018, 15. 1. 2018, 5. 1. 2018 a 30. 11. 2017.
