Watch out for mouldy organic beans

05/20/2008

Inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority have recently identified two cases of packages of organic beans some of which were mouldy present on the market. In either case, they were beans from big consignments from China, packed by PRO-BIO s.r.o.

In the first cases, 3000 kg of Adzuki coloured beans were imported to the Czech Republic, while at the time when this deficiency was identified more than 750 kg of beans have already been packed and dispatched. Products from this consignment (ADZUKI Coloured Beans BIOLINE, 500g package, best before: 26/03/2009 and 31/03/2009; ADZUKI Coloured Beans BIOHARMONY, 500g package, best before: 26/03/2009 and 10/04/2009) were distributed mostly to small retail shops.

In the second case, they were red kidney beans imported in a consignment of 7000 kg. About 80 per cent of this consignment was detained by the Inspection Authority yet at the PRO-BIO warehouse. The rest had already been packed and distributed to stores (Red Kidney Beans BIOHARMONY, 500g package, best before: 26/03/2009; Red Kidney Beans BIOLINE, 500g package, best before: 26/03/2009, 22/04/2009 and 08/04/2009).

Although the PRO-BIO was ordered to immediately withdraw all packages from its customers, part of the products may have already been sold. Since they are products with long shelf life, consumer may still have them at home. Because part of the consignment was dispatched to Slovakia and it was a dangerous food, CAFIA findings were notified through the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed.

The CAFIA check organic food like other food, because same safety, quality and labelling requirements as for ordinary food apply to it.
