Warning to consumers: Atropine in baby puree Nestlé from Spain in DM

04/13/2016

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) ordered  company dm drogerie markt s.r.o. to immediately withdraw foodstuff Nestlé nemléčná kaše osmizrná (milk-free puree with eight types of cereals) with best before 04-2017, lot L53030291, producer: Nestlé Espaňa, S.A., 39650-La, Penilla de Cayon (Cantabria), Spain. The products shall be withdrawn form the whole retail network.

The CAFIA laboratory analysis confirmed presence of atropine amounting to 7.9 micrograms per kilogram (μg/kg ), while the permitted level laid down by legislation is 1 μg/kg only. From this reason, the foodstuff was assessed as unsafe and CAFIA ordered its withdrawal from the market. Atropine is a tropane alkaloid with known negative effects on human health.

CAFIA entered the information into the European RASFF system and at the same time, recommends all consumers that they do not eat the given lot of the foodstuff in question. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the importer.
