The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority revealed two further food supplements which were ascertained to be harmful to health. In both cases, imported products were concerned and the Food Inspection Authority banned their further sale and ordered their withdrawal from the market.
The first product under name Animal Cuts (with expiration date 03/14/13) originating from the USA was sold in the CR by Marek Čollák from Český Těšín, operator of internet shops with nutrition for sportspeople. One tin of this product contained 336 pills divided into 42 batch packages and the recommended dosage was 2 packages per day. CAFIA laboratories revealed presence of hormone progesterone. Progesterone is contained in medicaments for medical prescription. However, its presence in food supplements sold over the counter is undesirable. According to the assessment of the Ministry of Health, a food supplement containing this hormone is regarded as dangerous. The product was imported to the ČR in the volume of 312 tins, i.e. more than hundred thousand pills.
The second case concerned a food supplement originating from China and sold under name Chlorella Extra (best before 11.2.2011, batch No. 20090212, packed in plastic doses à 100g or 300g). The Inspection Authority banned these pills as they contained lead in the amount exceeding the permitted limits. The pills in total volume of 200 kg were imported to the ČR by Prague company Blue step, Ltd. and almost a half of this volume was further distributed to Slovakia.
In case that consumers had the aforementioned batches of dangerous food supplements at home, the Inspection Authority does not recommend their consumption.
CAFIA notified other EU member states of both cases through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
