Third of fruit was missing in jam, Norma has to withdraw it

05/31/2016

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) ordered company NORMA k. s. to withdraw from all its branches non-compliant foodstuff Sauerkirsche konfitüre extra (note: Morello cherry jam extra) packaged à 860 g with best before date by 11th June 2017. The jam in question was made for NORMA, D-90257 Nürnberg, country of origin: Germany.

Labelling a foodstuff as “extra jam” is legal denomination protected by Decree No. 157/2003 Coll., which lays down minimum fruit content as 45% of the packaging content. Moreover, the producer indicated on the labelling “made from 45 g of fruit per 100g.” However, the laboratory analysis detected only 30.6% of the fruit content and the information on the labelling thus misled consumers.

Based on the given detection, CAFIA ordered the seller to immediately withdraw the given lot of the jam from the whole retail network. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.
