The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority repeated controls of the presence of beef in the imported meat products

05/21/2001

In respect of BSE occurrence in some European countries, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority continued in March and April to carry out inspections of the labelling of meat products with view of the identification of beef muscles present in particular products. This time the inspections focused on the imported food products sold on the Czech market.

The CAFIA inspectors took altogether 41 samples of packed meat products of foreign manufacturers imported from Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, France, Denmark and Austria. After completing laboratory analyses concentrating on identification of the presence of beef in the samples, the obtained results were compared with data specified on the product labels.

The inspections performed did not identify a false labelling in any of the cases; all the inspected products were properly labelled and did not contain beef muscles.

By comparison with results of the previous inspections of the same type, a considerable improvement has been achieved. The foreign manufacturers, or more precisely importers, have accepted a much more earnest approach to the proper labelling of meat products.

In compliance with a decision of the BSE Crisis Committee at the Ministry of Agriculture, CAFIA will continue in future to monitor the labelling of meat products sold on our market.
