The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority Imposed Fines of Nearly CZK 200 Million Last Year

05/12/2026

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) carried out a total of 47,370 inspections in 2025 as part of its official control activities aimed at protecting consumer health, legitimate consumer interests, and ensuring fair conditions for honest operators.

Of this total, CAFIA inspectors conducted: 18,055 inspections in retail establishments, 25,840 inspections in catering establishments, 8,521 inspections in food production facilities, 1,902 inspections in wholesale warehouses, 576 inspections in primary production, and 2,653 inspections at other locations, such as during transport, in customs warehouses, internet sales, etc.

Last year, CAFIA inspections identified a total of 2,310 non-compliant batches of food and other products.

In terms of country of origin, the inspection authority found the highest rate of non-compliance among food imported from so-called third countries, while the lowest proportion of non-compliant samples was confirmed for food products from domestic manufacturers, similarly to previous years. Among food products from third countries, 31.5% of the assessed batches failed to meet the requirements of national or European legislation. For food originating from EU countries, 19.5% of inspected batches were non-compliant, while domestic food products showed a non-compliance rate of 13.3%.

In 2025, a total of 3,564 administrative proceedings concerning violations of food law by operators were concluded. CAFIA imposed final fines amounting to CZK 199,667,000. This represents an increase of CZK 10 million compared to the previous year and CZK 70 million more compared to the total fines imposed two years ago. The collected fines constitute revenue for the state budget.

The CAFIA Annual Report for 2025 is available on the CAFIA website.

A significant portion of CAFIA inspections in 2025 focused on the catering sector. Inspectors carried out a total of 25,840 inspections in this segment, finding legal violations in 7,636 cases (nearly 30%).

Due to very serious breaches of hygiene regulations, CAFIA inspectors were forced to immediately close 114 restaurants, fast-food outlets, and other catering establishments. The catering sector therefore accounted for more than 73% of all establishments closed by CAFIA last year.

The Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority will continue enforcing the protection of consumer health, legitimate consumer interests, and honest business operators, with particular focus on problematic market segments, using the most advanced laboratory methods and targeted inspection mechanisms.
