The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority carried out controls of gluten and lactose ...

05/17/2001

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority carried out controls with focus on the compliance with the prescribed contents of gluten and lactose in foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional uses in the period of March and April. In parallel, the inspectors also paid particular attention to proper labelling of these kinds of foodstuffs.

CAFIA took altogether 28 samples of baked goods, pasta, custard, sweets and soft drinks in the course of two months in the premises of producers, importers and retailers from all over the country. Four of the samples of foodstuffs intended for gluten-free diet contained higher quantity of gluten than the limit value set in a respective decree, while the foodstuffs intended for persons suffering from lactose intolerance complied with the applicable regulations.

The inspectors identified 6 cases of false labelling; in 3 cases the producer were not able to submit a valid approval issued by the Ministry of Health that is a necessary prerequisite for the foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional uses to be released into circulation.

In two cases a ban of manufacturing was imposed on the non-conforming foodstuffs and in other two cases the ban was imposed on putting the food into circulation. In all the non-conformances identified, corrective actions were adopted and CAFIA will check on their implementation.

The foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional uses are, apart from other things, intended for persons suffering from food allergies and intolerances.

The lactose intolerance means a deficit of the lactose enzyme. The person affected is unable to digest lactose and suffers from nausea, flatulence and diarrhoea.

The intolerance to gluten - celiac disease - means that the persons afflicted display immoderate reaction to some cereal proteins. It is essential that such persons stick to a gluten-free diet.
