Special inspection on antibiotics in poultry meat from Poland

07/02/2013

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (hereinafter CAFIA only) undertook special inspection in retail stores focused on testing of antibiotics residues presence in poultry meat, especially in poultry meat from Poland. CAFIA reacts to findings of Slovak inspection authorities and to the news from Polish media on usage of pharmaceutics illegal in the EU on many farms in Poland or usage of legal pharmaceutics but with possible higher residues of antibiotics which could exceed limits set by legal provisions.
Inspection is primarily focused on the screening of selected types of antibiotics and other selected active fabrics. If these residues are found, Inspection Authority will undertake quantitative analysis and verifies compliance with the legal provisions. Usage of active healing fabric metronidazol is forbidden in the EU for its grown stimulus effect besides antibiotics effects. Other monitored fabrics are legal in food industry in case of keeping proper amounts and respecting safety period – healing fabrics are not used for specified period before slaughter in order to not exceed legal limits of antibiotics residues.
Inspection of chilled or frozen poultry meat in retail stores is specially focused on regions neighboring with Poland.  Besides retail stores the CAFIA is inspecting foodstuff in movable stores and direct import from Poland for retail stores.
