cr.jpg rakousko.jpg The project called “Cooperation of Czech and Austrian Food Inspectors in the Czech-Austrian Cross-Border Region” that was officially launched on 20 September 2005 and whose partner is the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority on the Czech side and the Offices of Upper and Lower Austria Government on the Austrian side has reached the half-way point.

The first short-term study visit of CAFIA inspectors in Austria took place at the beginning of October 2005. A group of inspectors from the CAFIA Inspectorate in Tábor specialized in delicatessen products and retail visited partnership organization in Linz and, together with their Austrian colleagues, participated in inspections. They discussed the most important Acts and regulations applicable in Austria and the EU, planning and course of inspections, sampling for laboratory analysis, and also visited Austrian laboratories. St. Pölten became the destination of inspectors from the CAFIA Inspectorate in Brno. Joint inspections focused on producers of bakery and confectionery products, semifinished products and ready-to-eat meals. Our inspectors had the opportunity to observe sampling, report making and checks on hygiene, and familiarized themselves with the way the Critical Control Point System (HACCP) is established in Austria. In the second half of October, control activities of the Food Inspection Authority were presented to Austrian inspectors during their visit in the Czech Republic. The most important part of this visit was again joint inspections; our Austrian colleagues were also shown around CAFIA laboratories.

The second series of exchange visits begun in November 2005, when the representatives of the CAFIA Inspectorate in Tábor, specialized in wine, and the representative of CAFIA Inspectorate in Brno, specialized in fresh fruit and vegetables, and dry shell fruits, visited Austria. The reciprocal visit of Austrian inspectors in Tábor focused on bakery and confectionery products, and on fruit and vegetables in Brno.

In 2006, the third and fourth series of exchange visits will take place, followed by a final conference to be held in Linz.

The objective of the project is to enhance the supervision of food safety on either side of the Czech-Austrian frontier.
