Together without frontiers
The project of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority and its Slovak counterpart the State Veterinary and Food Administration was launched today by the initial conference held in Trenčianské Teplice. The aim of the project is to enhance cooperation and establish personal contacts between inspectors in cross-border regions of the Slovak and Czech Republic in the filed of official food inspection. The project is funded mainly by the European Fund for Regional Development.
CAFIA inspectorates in Brno and Olomouc and SVFA regional authorities in Žilina, Trenčín, and Trnava will participate in the cooperation. The main objective of the project will be exchange visits of employees at both partnership authorities which will always be thematically focused on one area of inspection, for example inspections of retails, wine, fruit and vegetables, beverages producers, bakeries, etc. This way, the participants will gain basic information about the inspection system, inspection procedures or laboratory methods used by the partnership Authority and at the same time, they will have the opportunity to see how it all works in practise, as joint inspections at food business operators selected according to specific topics comprise the most significant part of the project. The aim of these visits is particularly exchange of experience in the area of implementation of legislation of the European Communities. Last but not least, these exchange visits will help to make useful professional contacts. In total, 32 inspectors will participate from each Authority.
“The issue of food safety is not limited by borders, non-existence of borders checks and free movement of goods make more demands on cooperation and possible coordination related to activities of supervisory bodies. From this reason, I do welcome any project which contributes to further enhancing such cooperation“, Jakub Šebesta, Director General of CAFIA, said during the initial conference.
The project will last six months, the final conference, at which results will be evaluated, will be held in Brno probably in June this year. The project budget amounts to almost 40 thousand EUR.
For the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority, it is already the second project of cross-border cooperation so far. At the turn of 2005 a 2006, similar exchange visits were carried out in cooperation with Austria. At the present time, arrangements for similar project with the Free State of Saxony are in progress as well.
