Press release of the Ministry of Agriculture and CAFIA - Minister Výborný: unifying supervision and transferring inspection competencies to CAFIA eliminates previously often illogical division of responsibilities

01/15/2025

Since 2015, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has been overseeing public catering facilities (restaurants, bars, pubs, wine bars, fast food outlets, confectioneries, food service areas at gas stations, etc.) alongside other supervisory bodies. As of January 1 of this year, the supervision of food law requirements in open-type catering establishments has been unified under the Ministry of Agriculture.

"Unifying supervision and transferring inspection competencies to CAFIA eliminate the previously often illogical division of responsibilities, where identical requirements for businesses with the same focus and comparable risk levels were supervised by different authorities. One of CAFIA’s key advantages is its centralized management and uniform methodological inspection procedures, ensuring consistency across sectors and regions. This creates a clearer, more transparent, and more predictable environment for both consumers and business operators," said Minister of Agriculture Marek Výborný (KDU-ČSL).

CAFIA inspections comprehensively cover all aspects of food law, including hygiene and microbiological requirements, food safety, quality control, food fraud prevention, consumer deception cases, and overall fairness in sales.

Thanks to the unification of supervisory competencies under the Ministry of Agriculture, consumers will have access to up-to-date information about establishments closed due to hygienic violations via the "Food Pillory" platform (www.potravinynapranyri.cz) and its extensions on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and X.

As of January 1, 2025, no significant changes will be introduced regarding obligations in the public catering sector, and the change in the supervisory authority for some establishments will not affect food business operators in any way.

A formal change will apply only to operators of open-type food service establishments who start, modify, or terminate their activities after January 1, 2025. They will now be required to notify CAFIA instead of the relevant Regional Hygiene Station, as was previously the case.
