The Food Inspection Authority ordered company Kaufland Česká republika v.o.s. to withdraw beverage Grande Cocoa drink plus vitamins, instant mixture for preparation of cocoa beverage, 600g, country of origin Poland, producer was not mentioned, distribution: Kaufland Česká republika V.O.S. The company was ordered not to place this product on the market. In case of the lots mentioned below, the product in question failed to comply with the content of cocoa powder.
The samples analysed contained by approximately 20% less cocoa compared to information given on the labelling, by which the producer misled consumers. CAFIA revealed adulteration of the beverage in question repeatedly.
In the past, the Inspection Authority proved that a Polish producer substituted cocoa powder with cheaper saccharose and the distributor had to withdraw the non-complying batch from his shops at the end of 2011.
During repeated inspection, which was concluded in recent days, two further lots of product failed to meet in the same parameter. The CAFIA´s laboratory tests proved that the producer used different method of the cocoa adulteration. One-fifth of cocoa was substituted by ground wooden substances from cocoa husks which should be removed during the production of cocoa. In practice, the producer verifiably tried to continue in misleading of consumers and comes up with sophisticated method of adulteration which is more difficult to detect.
“The cocoa adulterators historically use in particular three kinds of expensive cocoa powder substitution and this Polish producer used straight two of them as the textbook example.” Petr Cuhra, the director of Inspectorate in Prague, said and added: “Ground cocoa husks were identified in the laboratory tests which showed presence of tryptamid of lignocer acid which is a characteristic feature for this type of adulteration.”
