Permanent misleading of consumers by Polish producer in Kaufland

05/29/2012

Company Kaufland Česká republika, v. o. s. had to withdraw four lots of adulterated cocoa from its shops during last six months. This withdrawal was ordered by the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection (CAFIA). The Inspection Authority currently detected adulteration of product Kakao Grande with reduced amount of fat (packaging: 200 g, best before date: 3.2013/3, producer: unknown, distributor: Kaufland, country of origin: Poland). Laboratory analysis showed that 100% cocoa powder contained no more than 80% of cocoa. Additional test focused on the content of triptamide lignoceric acid further showed that missing cocoa was substituted by woody substance consisting of ground cocoa husks.
Pursuant to Commission Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002, the producer thus misled consumers and that is why withdrawal of the product from the retail network was ordered. Inspector found a sample of adulterated cocoa in Kaufland in Mariánské Lázně from where 136 pieces were withdrawn. The total number of pieces withdrawn from all branches is still being surveyed by the producer.

Significant quality malpractices with cocoa products under brand Grande, which are distributed only by company Kaufland into the CR, were detected repeatedly by CAFIA. At the end of 2011, by 20% lower cocoa content compared to the information given on the labelling was detected at instant cocoa beverage Grande Cocoa. The producer adulterated cocoa powder by cheaper saccharose, and Kaufland had to withdraw the product from retail network. In April CAFIA proved adulteration of the same product by ground husks - the way of adulteration that is more difficult to detect. The seller had to withdraw two lots of the beverage. Despite this Kaufland did not stop cooperation with an undefined Polish producer who continued with adulteration, and the Inspection Authority detected adulteration of cocoa with ground cocoa husks again. Consistent – approximately 20% level of the adulterated content and the time span between the single cases indicate that it is not technological indiscipline but intentionally set system.
