Papaya with unauthorized genetic modification found in Prague restaurant

Within its competences, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) pays attention also to observance of legislation for genetic modified foodstuffs. Inspections are carried in retail network, at premises of public catering and in preceding stages of placing these foodstuffs on the market.

During an inspection in Prague restaurant Nadji Club, s.r.o. on Bubenské nábřeží in Prague 7 –  Holešovice, CAFIA inspectors took a sample of fresh green papaya for laboratory testing – Cooking papaya brand NAMDHARIS, lot no: FLNEF25611010,  exporter Flora Capital CO., LTD, Pathumthani, Thailand.

Analysis proved presence of unauthorised GMO and the foodstuff thus violated requirements of relevant piece of legislation. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a sanction with the inspected person.

Regulation of the European Parliament and Council (EC) No. 1829/2003 on genetic modified food and feed stipulates that these foodstuffs must not be placed on the internal EU market with exception of 97 genetically modified crops are exceptions, however, they are varieties of 5 elementary crops: maize, soya, cotton plant, oilseed rape, and sugar beet.
