Infants and children up to the age of 3 years are considered to be a sensitive consumer group, thus food intended for them is subjected to specific requirements on safety, quality, and labelling. The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority pays high attention to checks of observance of these requirements. In this year, the Inspection Authority has already assessed 255 samples of baby snacks, food, and drinks. All sorts of snacks, food (vegetable based, meat-vegetable based, soups, etc.), and drinks sampled were both Czech and foreign origin. Also bio snacks sold in certain drugstores were assessed.
In particular safety but also quality were checked. The Inspection Authority ascertained whether the products contain contaminants, exceeding amount of salt, whether their actual energy value, content of vitamins, proteins, fats, and saccharides comply with the information given on the labelling. Last but not least, inspectors checked whether producers indicate all information prescribed by legislation on the labelling and whether storage conditions are met.
Only 14 samples failed to comply with legislation requirements. However, none of these shortcomings related to product safety – occurrence of foreign substances as well as higher content of salt were not detected. In majority of cases, shortcomings concerned labelling or missing information in Czech language, in four cases, the entrepreneur stored the snacks under higher temperatures. Only three products failed to comply with quality requirements – one product contained lower energy value than given on the labelling, another product contained lower content of proteins, and the last one was incorrectly labelled as regards energy value and saccharides content. However, differences between real and declared values were only slight in all cases. Besides, the producers of the three non-complying products have already re-labelled the snacks in question and new labels for further batches were prepared.
