Within its responsibilities, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority is consistently focused on inspections of honey. In addition to compliance with quality requirements, the Authority also verifies whether honey is adulterated or not. In recent days the Food Inspection Authority revealed eight cases of adulterated honey.  

Analyses carried out by CAFIA revealed presence of higher content of so-called C4 sugars. They are sugars created by non-melliferous plants, such as maize or sugar cane. Detection of C4 sugars thus proves adding sugar in honey which is not allowed. Legislation defines honey as a foodstuff of natural saccharine origin in which any substances including additives must not be added. It is only possible to add another kind of honey. All eight samples were a mixture of various kinds of honey both from European and other countries.  

The Food Inspection Authority regarded adding sugar as deceiving consumers and therefore immediate withdrawal of honey in question was ordered. CAFIA also handed all information to the State Veterinary Administration which is responsible for performing inspections directly at producers or importers of adulterated honey.
