Mushrooms can only be sold by persons holding a certificate of qualification

06/13/2002

Until this Saturday the mushrooms growing wild can be sold, in practice, by anyone owing a trade licence only. The same was applied also in the previous year when no expert or other knowledge or skills were required. This all will change from June 16 when the requirements for sellers of mushrooms will become stricter. In connection with a new Act No. 146/2002, Coll. of L., on the National Agriculture and Food Inspection Office, an amendment to the Food Law will come into effect altering requirements for sale and processing of mushrooms growing wild or cultivated.

Therefore, starting from June 16 anyone who will sell the picked up mushrooms must hold a certificate proving his/her knowledge of mushrooms. The certificate shall be issued, on the basis of a successfully passed special examination, by authorities protecting public health, i.e. the appropriate health offices. The application for taking such an examination has to be provided with a medical certificate of the eyesight examination and statement of criminal records. In addition to such a certificate, the seller has to be, of course, a holder of a trade licence.

Mushrooms can be sold only under specific conditions - they must not be sliced, only one cut is admissible that does not separate the pileus from the stipe, the mushrooms need not be grown too old, beginning to ferment, too wet and by no means mouldy or partially decayed. They should be dry and clean, provided with the pick-up date and the use-by-date, which must not be longer than three days from the date when they were picked up. Also a temperature has been prescribed for the mushrooms storage and transport, which is between 0°and 10° C.

Some 50 kinds of mushrooms growing wild can be sold in the Czech Republic. Their list is specified in the Decree No. 332/1997, Coll. of L., issued by the Ministry of Agriculture as amended. The Decree, including the list of mushrooms, is published at the CAFIA web site
