During an inspection at the premises of company Ing. Pavel Tomáš PT-SERVIS in Prague 9, CAFIA inspectors detected products that were misleadingly labelled. Three sorts of preserved vegetables in glass were re-labelled or were labelled with modified labels and the best before date was changed to indicate later date. More or less successful attempts to remove the original best before dates were obviously made in several cases. CAFIA imposed a measure that banned putting these products into circulation.

Following products are concerned by the measure:

1. Bean pods green, packed in glass, weight 670 g, alleged producer PT servis konzervárna spol. s. r. o., Tábor, Purkyňova 1000, CR, lot L8274. Date on the lid is 2.10.2011, paper label indicates best before date 3 years from the date on the lid.

2. Carrot salad in sweet and sour pickle, packed in glass, weight 330 g, country of origin EU, distributor: Ing. Pavel Tomáš, PT servis, Kpt. Stránského 959, Praha 9, CR, lot L8318. There were two round labels on the lid that were stuck over each other and contained different text. The upper label indicated best before date 31.12.2014. There was a date printed on the side of the lid: 14.11.2011.

3. Cornishon cucumbers in spicy sweet and sour pickle with sugar, packed in glass, weight 330 g, country of origin EU, distributor: PT servis konzervárna spol. s r.o., Purkyňova 1000, 390 02 Tábor, lot L 8183 and L 8183, best before date indicated on the label 31.12.2013. However, data 1.6.2011 and 1.7.2011 were identified on the side of the lid and there were signs of attempt to remove them.

With regard to the indicated best before dates, consumers still may have these products at home. In fact they are products with expired best before date; it is thus up to the consumers whether they decide to eat them.

For the sake of completeness, CAFIA adds that foodstuffs with expired best before date can be put into circulation if they are safe and if they are labelled as expired and placed separately. After the given date, producers do not guarantee taste and nutrition qualities of such products. The seller is responsible for safety of foodstuffs with expired best before date.

However, foodstuffs with indicated use by date, given by wording “Use before/by” cannot be put into circulation after expiration of the indicated date.
