Misleadingly labelled goods in burnt-out storage

03/01/2012

Interior destroyed by fire and further deficiencies were found by inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority during the inspection at the premises of Ing. Pavel Tomáš PT – SERVIS company in Úvaly. Deficiencies were also found at some stored foodstuffs.

On the packaging of one sort of product – Cornichon cucumbers in the amount exceeding 2,000 pieces, there was an obvious attempt to remove the original best before date and re-label it by a new best before date extending the durability of the product by c. 2.5 year. The inspectors also found a range of other products with original labelling in German with expired best before date.

When checking the five-floor building, the inspectors found marks after fire; walls and ceiling were heavily burnt, burnt painting and brickwork were flaking off. On all floors there were marks after leaking water, bricking was flaking off from walls and ceilings. Floors were fouled with filth and all stored foodstuffs were covered with a thick film of dust. Marks after rodents were found in the basement. There were no basins in the building as well as lighting. It was possible to move only with a torch. Black mould visible to the naked eye was detected on the walls.

CAFIA banned putting product “Cornichon cucumbers in spicy sweet and sour pickle with sugar” into circulation. As regards the other incorrectly labelled foodstuffs, the operator said that they were intended for claim for replacement and returning to the producer or disposal. CAFIA therefore ordered the operator to show how the goods will be further handled. CAFIA imposed a ban of using the storage non-compliant for storing of foodstuffs..
