Inspections of half-fermented wine: In comparison with last year, the sellers improved

12/20/2006

Six out of 49 samples of half-fermented wine taken from stalls and shops were unsatisfactory. This is the outcome of inspections of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority, focused on the content of exogenous (added) water in this beverage. The inspections were carried out from the beginning of August to the end of November, therefore in the period when this grape must in fermentation can be offered for sale. Inspectors took the samples throughout the whole Czech Republic.

Based on their experience from inspections carried out in past years, they identified selling places where the quality of half-fermented wine could be impaired, thus where it could be “baptized” with water. The test results established that the six unsatisfactory samples contained added water from 25 to 75 per cent. The sellers will be subject to administrative proceedings and the CAFIA will impose high fines on them.

In comparison with last year’s results of inspections, this is a significant shift for the better. Laboratory tests revealed 15 unsatisfactory out of total of 39 samples taken during last year’s period of half-fermented wine. Fines imposed in administrative proceedings in the case of exogenous water usually ranged from CZK 75,000 to 280,000.

This year, for the first time, the CAFA used for testing its own unique laboratory instrument that works on the principle of nuclear magnetic resonance and isotope analysis. In the past, the CAFIA sent the samples for analysis and evaluation also to laboratories in France, Germany or Austria. There are only two tens of these unique instruments in the countries of the European Union.

The six persons inspected (place of sampling) who failed to comply are specified in the following overview.
