Inspection of teas and tobaccos for hookahs in tea rooms

Within its extended competencies consisting in inspection of public catering premises, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) carried out an inspection activity focused on quality and safety of teas, tobaccos for hookahs offered in tea rooms. The operators of tea rooms often import the assortment directly from the countries of origin, which is different from the offer in the market network where CAFIA carries out its inspections on regular basis. During the check and assessment, the inspectors were focused in particular on the content of pesticides in teas and keeping the weight, content of tobacco or more precisely nicotine, and relevant labelling of tobacco.

Within the inspection, the CAFIA inspectors took 28 samples of teas in 23 premises. Out of these samples, 14 were black teas, and 14 green and white teas. As regards the country of origin, 15 samples originated from China, 6 from India, 2 from Japan and 1 sample originated from each of following countries: Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Kenya. 2 samples from China failed to comply with the assessed parameters, namely due to exceeding the limits for pesticide residues. The results of the assessment complied with requirements for labelling, weight and content of nicotine as well.
