Inspection of ketchups confirmed their safety

11/25/2011

Based particularly on the information published in the media, according to which certain selected ketchups contained dangerous contaminants, CAFIA carried out sampling and subsequent laboratory analyses of selected ketchups which were checked for the presence of pesticides and mycotoxins.

Two samples were checked for the presence of pesticides (Heinz Fine Tomato Ketchup and Hellmans Fine Ketchup). Both ketchups were assessed as complying and thus safe. The contained trace amount of monitored substances complied with the prescribed limits for ketchups, nevertheless, it would also comply with standards e.g. for baby food.

COOP Classic Fine KETCHUP and SPAR Sweet Ketchup were analysed for mycotoxins. These substances were not found in the analysed samples or more precisely the levels of their detectable amount were not reached.

Further four samples were analysed for quality. Clever Fine Ketchup (lot L120811, best before date 090213) and Hamé Sweet Ketchup (lot L010911, best before date 010313) showed slightly lower proportion of the tomato dry matter. The producer was ordered to remedy the technological procedure of production.

The inspection revealed certain deficiencies in labelling of the sampled ketchups. In some cased, information on the amount of tomatoes was missing on the labelling. CAFIA therefore ordered the producers to remedy the labeling of the ketchups in question.
