Inspection Authority withdrew roasted pischachios with aflatoxins exceeding the limits from the market

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected aflatoxins in volume exceeding the limits in product under name "Pistachios roasted salted" (lot L046, best before 18. 12. 2011, packaging á 200 g).
Company IBK TRADE, which bought the raw material (originating from Iran) from company MB INDUSTRY s. r. O. Chrastava, is the producer of the foodstuff in question. Company IBK TRADE delivered processed pistachios to company AHOLD Czech Republic, a.s. in volume of 358,4 kg.
Aflatoxins are one of the kinds of mycotoxins produced by some kinds of moulds and belongs among dangerous substances threatening human health. They affect in particular dry shell fruit such as various kinds of nuts and also certain cereals as well. Import of dry shell nuts from certain countries, for example right pistachios from Iran, almonds from the USA, peanuts from China etc., is subject to a specific regime.
Based on the detection mentioned above and the imposed measure, company Ahold Czech Republic, a.s. immediately withdrew this foodstuff from circulation. With regard to the best before date, consumers may still have the contaminated pistachios at home. CAFIA does not recommend their consumption.

Information on the case was entered into the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) that warns also other Member States of the European Union about similar products.
