Member States of the EU were warned through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed against food supplement Magic Power Coffee originated from the USA. The food supplement in question is sold in the form of instant coffee beverage enriched with further ingredients (vitamins, Chinese matrimony, and ginseng). According to the producer, the product is manufactured solely from natural raw materials and has strong aphrodisiac effects. However, the American Food and Drug Administration detected presence of hydroxythiohomosildenafil in the product in question and therefore warned American consumers against consumption of this supplement. General warning against this supplement was also sent through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) to all EU Member States.
The assessment of the Ministry of Health of the CR says that a food supplement containing hydroxythiohomosildenafil cannot be regarded as a safe foodstuff. With its structure and effects, hydroxythiohomosildenafil is similar to sildenafil which is used in the production of medicaments. With regard to the degree of undesirable side effects, these medicaments can be used only on prescription. Presence of sildenafil as well as its structural analogues is not allowable in over-the-counter medicaments.
The Food Inspection Authority has not had information yet that food supplement Magic Power Coffee is sold on the CR territory. However, web pages run from abroad but available in Czech language, where this supplement can be ordered from the USA through a mediatory company, can be found on the Internet. The Food Inspection Authority thus does not recommend that consumers buy this supplement. In case someone has already bought it, he/she should discontinue its use immediately.
When shopping on the Internet, it is always good to stick several principles which are also applicable to the purchase of food supplements. Consumers should be interested particularly in the subject from which they purchase. Every e-shop has to specify information on the business operator, in particular the name of the company, its site, and identification number. If this information is not specified, consumers should ask for it. Information on the business operator can also be verified in the Company or Trade Register. Before the purchase itself, people should read carefully over contract terms and conditions as well as conditions concerning guarantee and complaints. Consumers should also pay attention to information on all costs associated with the purchase (postage and packing, duty fees) and information on the terms of delivery and the collection of goods, in particular when the goods is delivered from abroad. In general, people should be careful if they are required to give personal or sensitive information such as access passwords, number of credit cards or account numbers.
