Foreign cheese and ham contained more salt than indicated on the labelling

06/17/2016

During its inspections of food products, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) focuses also on inspection of nutritional claims in food composition and tables with nutritional information which comprises also information on the content of salt.  Current medicinal or nutritional-advisory studies dealing with the issue of salt content often insinuate that the population is “oversalted” which has alleged undesirable impact on the health of consumers.

CAFIA currently detected two cases of misleading consumers as regards following foreign foodstuffs where the content of salt was higher than indicated on the labelling.

Following products are concerned:

◾Bluedino jemný tavený sýr s Ementálem (Bluedino fine processed cheese with Emental) à 140g with best before date by 26th  July 2016 made by Polish producers SERTOP sp. z o o. ul. Przemyslowa 58, 43-100 Tychy. Information on the labelling indicated 2.00g of salt/100g, while the analysis proved presence of 3.39 g of salt/100 g. The sample was taken in Lidl Česká republika v. o. s., 28. října 1607/16, 692 01 Mikulov.

◾Vepřová šunka Royal (Pork ham royal) with best before date by 24th May 16 made by German producer Ponnath, Die Meistermetzker GmbH Bayreutherstr. 40, D-95478 Kemnath. Information on the labelling indicated 2.30g of salt/100g of ham compared to 3.05g of salt detected in 100g of the product which was sampled Kaufland Česká republika v.o.s., Sokolská 5300, 76001 Zlín.

CAFIA ordered the sellers to withdraw the product from their retail network in the whole Czech Republic and will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with them.
