The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) warns consumers not to buy and eat roasted peanuts in coconut juice labelled as “Roasted Peanuts with Coconut Juice” (35 g, labelled with dates: 17/12/05E33, 16/08/06). This product was imported to the Czech Republic from Vietnam by RUZEK ASSOCIATES, s.r.o., Plzeň. According to the information of the Customs office in Karlovy Vary, a total of 1050 kg of this unsafe product was imported to the Czech Republic.
The CAFIA laboratory in Prague established that the maximum aflatoxin level was exceeded more than thirty times. For this reason, the Inspection Authority does not recommend eating this unsafe food. It is probable that peanuts were, or still are, sold mainly at Asia stands and on the marketplace. Consumers who have already bought them have the right to reclaim them.
Aflatoxins belong to the group of mycotoxins and are formed as products of moulds. They are dangerous to human health because they are considered to be carcinogenic. There are very strict limits for their presence in foodstuffs and the European Commission through supervisory bodies strictly monitors food which may contain them.
The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority today sent notification concerning this product to the Brussels central office of the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
