The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) recently found misleadingly labelled milk on the market which failed to comply with the information given on the labelling.
Namely, it was Vian mléko polotučné čerstvé 1,5% (Vian fresh half-fat milk 1,5%, use by date 27 August 2008) which contained lower percentage of fats and proteins and Ekomilk čerstvé mléko polotučné 1,5% (Ekomilk fresh half-fat milk, use by date 1 September 2008) which contained lower percentage of fat than specified on the labelling. Both products were manufactured by company Ekomilk, s.r.o., Frýdek-Místek.
The Inspection Authority ordered to withdraw the non-complying batches of this milk from the retail network. The case of these misleadingly labelled products was handed over to the Regional Veterinary Station in Ostrava so that it could be investigated directly at the producer.
Although the main priority of activities of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) is surveillance over food safety, CAFIA puts emphasis on quality control and revealing adulteration as well, thus misleadingly labelled foodstuffs. The aim of these inspections is to protect economical interests of consumers and at the same time to protect interests of fair entrepreneurs by setting equal conditions.
