Food Inspection Authority informs about the results of further analyses of food additive E 412 originating in India

09/18/2007

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA), in cooperation with the General Directorate of Customs (GDC), decided a few weeks ago not to release consignments of food additive E 412 – guar gum originating in India on the Czech market without being tested for safety. The reason for this decision were consignments of food additive E 412 contaminated with pentachlorophenol and dioxins, supplied to the EU market in previous months from India through Switzerland. This measure is in accordance with instructions of the European Commission.

Eight consignments of Indian guar gum have been checked so far. Since laboratory analyses had not revealed an excessive amount of contaminants in any of these consignments, they were put on the market.

At present, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA), in cooperation with the General Directorate of Customs (GDC), have suspended another four consignments of Indian guar gum. These will not be put on the market until their safety has been established.

This measure imposed by the CAFIA and the GDC continues to be applicable. The CAFIA will inform on the results of laboratory analyses.
