Food Inspection Authority banned Tesco from selling misleadingly labelled butter from Belgium

01/19/2007

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) banned the company Tesco from selling two sorts of butter originating from Belgium. Products sold under name Les 3 sapins and Belle de Herve were misleadingly labelled as “fresh butter”, although their characteristics were not appropriate.

The use by dates indicated on the packaging of these products were 6 March, 20 March and 27 March. The use by date of the butter must not be longer than 20 days from the date of its production, so that it could be labelled as “fresh”. In the cases mentioned above, the use by date ranged in interval of months.

In the matter of selling butter with the misleading labelling, CAFIA will commence an administrative proceeding with the Tesco company.
