Food Inspection Authority again warns: fake inspectors have begun to levy fines for invented misdemeanours

01/20/2006

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) again warns against men who pose themselves as food inspectors.

After two cases identified by the Food Inspection Authority on Monday, 16 January, fake inspector/s reappeared in other three places, again in Prague 6, in Prague 8, and in Hostivice, Prague-East District. In the shops they “checked”, they proved their identity to the saleswomen with a fake card that carried the CAFIA logo, but incorrect address. They levied on-the-spot fines of CZK 1,000 and 2,000. The legislation, however, does not allow the CAFIA inspectors to impose on-the-spot fines. These can be imposed only in administrative proceedings.

The Food Inspection Authority again warns all traders or food business operators to require during inspectors´ visits not only CAFIA card, but also so called Authorization for inspection that every inspector must carry. The Inspection Authority also recommends traders to contact the CAFIA Inspectorate in Prague at 257 199 511 in case of any suspicion, or to refer to any other CAFIA Inspectorate. Contact telephone numbers can be found on the Food Inspection Authority website at www.szpi.gov.cz.

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority lodged a complaint to the Police of the Czech Republic against unknown offender on suspicion of committing a crime.
