Food containing the unauthorised MPA hormone cannot be legally sold at the Czech market

07/12/2002

In connection to the identification of The Standing Committee for the Food Chain and Animal Health at the EU referring to the unauthorised MPA growth hormone that was detected in some foodstuffs produced in some countries of the European Union, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority informs that such foodstuffs should not be in circulation at the Czech market, in conformity with the valid legislation.

The MPA growth hormone (medroxyprogesterone acetate) is not listed among the substances that the present Czech legislation approves to be used in the food production. If any producer would plan to utilise MPA in the production or distribution of foodstuffs, he would have to apply the Ministry of Health for approval. Without a valid authorisation of the Ministry of Health of CR, it is legally impossible to release such food in circulation. The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority has no information available that such an authorisation has been issued.

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority has been currently verifying whether there is any possibility that the suspicious foodstuffs might have been imported to the Czech Republic
