DNA analysis proved untrue labelling of garlic variety

05/12/2016

Through a DNA analysis, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected a sale of garlic with misleading labelling of its variety. During an inspection carried out at the premises of Alexandr Hepnar, Husovo náměstí 16, 55203 Česká Skalice, the CAFIA inspectors took a sample of fresh garlic labelled as “česnek Bjetin Česko” (name of the variety). A laboratory analysis was carried out comparing selected parts of the gene of the taken sample with the gene of the Bjetin variety. The laboratory results did not prove genetic similarity, and falsehood of the information was thus proved.

Indicating the variety failing to correspond to the actual variety of the garlic, the seller violated Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 and CAFIA will initiate and administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with him. Bjetin is a variety cultivated in the Czech Republic. CAFIA will continue with inspections focused on truthfulness of information of the variety and origin during the sale of fresh garlic.
